Like any major holiday, there are bound to be a few laundry mishaps. Here are some tips on how to tackle some common Valentine’s Day stains.
Chocolate
We can’t talk about Valentine’s Day laundry without talking about chocolate. If you encounter this mishap, put the chocolate covered piece of clothing in your refrigerator for 10-20 minutes to contain the stain and prevent the chocolate from penetrating the fabric any further. Once the chocolate has hardened, you can carefully scrape away the excess. Mix hot water and Oxygen Brightener Stain Remover, and use the paste to pre-treat your garment. Wash your clothing according to the care instructions and if the stain is still present after the first wash then pre-treat and wash it again.
Red Wine
It happens to the best of us! Blot away excess stain with a paper towel or clean dish towel. Cover the stain with distilled white vinegar to neutralize red and purple pigments found in red wine. Sprinkle table salt generously over the stain and allow to dry. Put the garment over a bowl or sink and pull taught (if safe to do so). Pour clean, boiling water over the stained area from approximately 12 inches above the stain. Repeat as necessary until stain is removed. Launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric and check the stain before drying.
Fresh Flowers
Perhaps the most over-looked Valentine’s Day stain culprit. Pollen from fresh-cut flowers can make a mess of your clothing if you hold them too close and can be a tricky stain to get out. Shake away as much excess pollen as possible, then use a piece of tape to gently lift the remaining pollen from the fabric. Next, apply a paste of Oxygen Brightener Stain Remover to the stained area and soak in cold water. Wash and repeat until there are no traces of pollen remaining before laundering.
Make Up
As with any Valentine’s day laundry mishap, it’s important to act fast if you want to successfully remove the stain. First, apply rubbing alcohol directly to the stain by dabbing some of it onto a paper towel and blotting until the paper towel won’t remove the stain anymore. Then, pre-treat with a paste of hot water and Oxygen Brightener Stain Remover and launder as usual in cold water. Hang to dry and check to see if the stain is gone. Repeat if necessary.
Some stains make take several attempts, do not dry your garment until you are sure the stain has been removed. You can continue to treat the stain 2-3 times until successful, washing between each treatment.
And remember – always read product labels and clothing care labels before taking action!
